Freshly baked whole wheat rolls without added salt! These homemade rolls are a simple addition to family meals, and kids love them. Try a little honey for extra sweetness.
Ingredients
- 2½ cups whole wheat flour
- ¼ cup warm water (for activating yeast)
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- ¾ cup warm water (for mixing dough)
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1
In a small container, combine ¼ cup warm water, 1 packet active dry yeast, and 1 teaspoon sugar. Swirl or stir gently and let stand about 10 minutes until bubbly.

Step 2
Meanwhile, add 2½ cups whole wheat flour to a large mixing bowl and make a well in the center.

Step 3
Pour the activated yeast mixture into the well. Add the remaining ¾ cup warm water as you fold the dough together until all the flour is incorporated.
Step 4
Knead the dough by folding it over itself for about 10 minutes.
Step 5
Return the dough to the bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and leave in a warm place for about 1 hour, until roughly doubled in size.
Step 6
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Step 7
Divide the dough into 12 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball and arrange on the baking sheet.

Step 8
Bake for 25–30 minutes, until the rolls rise slightly and are browned on the outside.

Step 9
Serve with your meal. For a touch of sweetness, try a drizzle of honey.

Yield: 12 rolls. Added salt: None. Ingredients such as yeast and flour may contain small amounts of naturally occurring sodium.
